Born in Iowa in 1970, I found bikes to be amazing gift of independence. I brought my first nice road bike in 1980, a Fuji Sagres with ValLite Tubing and 12 speeds! That bike was with me all the way through college and took me everywhere I needed to go and probably a few places I didn’t need to. While in college (University of Iowa, B.S., Psychology, 1992) I was swept up in the mountain bike boom and the hook was set for life.

After graduation, Jennifer and I evacuated -80 degree wind chill temps in Iowa and headed toward Arizona with little more than would fit in the tiniest U-haul and some hope. I found employment at BikeChalet in Mesa and was fortunate to find tutelage under some of the best in the business. I still owe a great deal to Warren and Russ Hickman, Doug Roether, Mike Wetzler and Posthumous thanks to Mercedes Heinrich and Bannister Allen. I wouldn’t be where I am without their help.
